Standard Work is NOT Standard Operating Procedure! Standard Work documents the time and motion of a worker in the act of performing a task or operation. It is a simple written and visual description of the safest, highest quality, and most efficient way known to perform a particular process or task. It is used by both the workforce and the supervisory staff to train and evaluate. When correctly applied, Standard Work will not only sustain kaizen improvements, but also expose and eliminate previously unseen waste.

This method lends itself to any repetitive process and especially to Changeover Time or Make Ready. Changeover time is particularly important to keep at a minimum since every minute is non-value added and comes directly out of the bottom line!
