The A3 Problem Solving Process & Root Cause Analysis

1 Day Course, 8 Hours

Course Overview

A structured problem-solving approach that uses a tool called the A3 Problem-Solving Report. The problem-solver records the results of investigation and planning in a concise, two-page document (the A3 Report, adapted from Toyota) that facilitates knowledge sharing and collaboration.

The class will explore the various methods and tools used to reveal Root Cause for errors and undesirable conditions in their processes.

At the completion of the class, the Learner will be able to use the A3 form and reporting process to:

The A3 process is rooted in the more basic Deming PDCA cycle. Steps 1-8 are the Plan step (with step 5 planning the Do step and step 6 planning the Check step). Step 9 is the Do step, and step 10 is the Check step. Based on the evaluation, another problem may be identified and the A3 process starts again (Act).

Learning Objectives

  • Identify a problem or need
  • Conduct research to understand the current situation
  • Conduct root cause analysis
  • Devise countermeasures to address root causes
  • Create an implementation plan
  • Develop a follow-up plan with predicted outcomes
  • Discuss plans with all affected parties
  • Obtain approval for implementation
  • Evaluate the results
  • Implement plans
This interactive course has the learners apply the A3 process directly to their process improvement efforts at their workplace. A real-time A3 is created in class.
(Open enrollment and public courses will create a mock-up.)
